Strengthening Crab Sector Enterprises in Satkhira District through Technological Intervention and Environmental Improvement” under Sustainable Enterprise Project (SEP)

Introduction/Summary:

Shyamnagar is the biggest upazila (subdistrict) of Satkhira district. It is a coastal upazila surrounded by the world heritage site Sundarbans, the largest mangrove forest in the world. This area is full of natural resources like fish, crab, honey, thatch and others. Due to availability of saline water crab farming and shrimp farming is a common profession in this region. The both shrimp farmers and crab farmers are contributing in national economy through crab and shrimp farming and exporting.  In this context Nowabenki Gonomukhi Foundation (NGF) is implementing a sub project titled “Strengthening Crab Sector Enterprises in Satkhira District through Technological Intervention and Environmental Improvement” under SustainableEnterprise Project (SEP) for the betterment of the farmers or Micro Enterprises (ME). This project is financed by World Bank and cooperated by Palli Karma-Sahayok Foundation (PKSF). The project is being implemented in Shyamnagar and Kaliganj upazila of Satkhira district since 2019. The project targeted fifteen thousand MEs. The major achievements of this reporting month are as follows:

Major Achievements:

  • Approx. 250 MEs have been trained up on Good Aquaculture Practice (GAP)
  • Soft Shell Crab Farming training has been provided to 75 MEs
  • Crab Fattening training has been provided to 75 MEs
  • Around 3.5 crore (3,44,82000 crore) BDT loan has been provided among 165 MEs

Up to September, 2021

  • Initiative has been taken to establish facilities for crab diseases diagnosis lab
  • 7 Environmental Clubs have been formed
  • Cleaning activities have been conducted regularly by environmental clubs

Initiated to develop drainage system of crab markets

 

  • Solid waste management has been introduced among Micro Enterprises (MEs)
  • Compost is produced through solid waste management
  • Agricultural initiatives have been taken using produced compost
  • Added project site location in Google map
  • Awareness campaigns have been conducted through environmental clubs to fight against COVID-19
